[edit] General Information

The island of Spetses is another popular weekend destination of the Athenians. It used to be very green, predominately with pine trees, but much of it vegetation has been destroyed by two large fires. The main town of Spetses, called Dapia, and the old Harbor are strongly recommended places to visit. Spetses is an island with strong night life and there are plenty of taverns and bars, but one has to be cautious: popular places tend to be overpriced.

[edit] Weather

North of Spetses is the area where many times the winds blowing from the Argolic golf and the bay of Ermioni meet resulting to wind shear with usually low strength, but very difficult for sailing. Unless you are willing to preform endless tacks, in such weather it is advisable to use your engine for a while...

[edit] Sailing

The main harbor of Spetses is good only for a "quick" stop, as it is not at all protected from bad weather. Be aware that even if you arrive with little or no wind, west winds tend to start quite suddenly.

If you plan to spend the night moored, it is advisable to stay in the old harbor. Be cautious because the space is very limited and the port is often crowded. Also, bear in mind that in the far end of the port (where you might find a space) are the permanent places of the fishing boats and the sea taxis. Ask to make sure you cause no trouble. In the outer area of the old harbor there is no dock. You will need long ropes and your dingy.

If you prefer anchoring, Zogeria is ideal.

[edit] Other Information

If you are into outdoor activities, you rent a bicycle and make the tour of the island. The perimeter is about 30km. If you do this in the Summer, start early in the morning as you don't want to get caught by the noon's sun.

If you like a quite night with clean drinks, fair prices and good music, go to bar Spetsa. If you like dancing, the old harbor is your place, but watch what you drink.
