Central San Francisco Bay begins at the west at the Golden Gate Bridge, extends to the east bay shore of Berkeley and Oakland, and includes San Francisco itself to the south and Sausalito, Belvedere, and Tiburon to the north. It includes two islands: the infamous Alcatraz, a former prison and now a major tourist destination, and Angel Island, a state park that offers the central bay's only public mooring field, lots of public docks, and miles and miles of beautiful hiking trails.

There's more than three dozen marinas in the central bay, with some 11,000 slips. There's surprisingly few places to visit that have public docks, but many marinas will offer a guest slip with advance notice, and there are a few restaurants with docks -- most notably, Sam's in Tiburon. Angel Island offers the best anchorages. The most protected of them, Ayala Cove, is filled with docks and mooring balls. Several other places around the island offer moderate protection and make great lunch stops. Richardson Bay, between Sausalito and Belvedere, is the only large anchorage in the bay, and the only place where a visitor can anchor for an extended period.

Sailing in the central bay is often a thrill, with typical winds of 15 to 25 knots, especially on summer afternoons. The currents can be strong, up to 5 knots, so it is important to check the tide charts when planning your trip.
