Nisyros is located in the south of Kos. The island has an active vulkano, which is also the main tourist attraction. Nisyros offers two harbours, both located on the nothern coast of this island. In the northeast there is the harbour "Paloi", in the northwest there is the "Mandraki" harbour.

[edit] Mandraki harbour
coordinate: 36°36.8'N 027°08.4'E
The town harbour Mandraki offers a few berths for yachts, which have to moor stern-to at the western pier. The berths are okay, but in summer there should be a lot of swell caused by the etesiens from NW.
Keep clear of the southern pier, the water depth decreases rapidely there.
The nothern pier is reserved for ferries and tourist boats.
The infrastructure in Mandraki is quite well. There is a bar directly at the pier, water will be delivered by tank cars (as usual is this region because of lack of the freshwater). Toilets can be found near the northern pier.
Near the southern pier there is a hotel. If there are rooms vacant, you can take a shower there for a couple of euros.
The town itself offers various restaurants, but many of them are very touristic. If you leave the promenade, you will also find alternative taverns. There are also some shops and a car rental.
[edit] Paloi harbour
coordinate: 36°37.15'N 027°10.25'E
This harbour is better protected against swell compared to Mandraki. But this harbour is quite narrow and very shallow. For sailing yachts, suitable depth can only be found near the nothern pier. Because of the shallow water and many anchor chains, manoeuvring can be tricky.
Best place for bike and car rentals is from Mike at Eagle's Nest located next to the church in Pali. Friendly service which includes a written guide to follow during your stay in Nisyros in over 25 languages. Mike will happily help you in anything you need during your stay. www.eaglesnestnisyros.com
[edit] Tips
- Recommended is a trip to the vulcano. You can try to join a guided excursion or to get there by bus, which goes there sometimes. In any case you can rent a car at one of the both harbours to get there. A special experience is to walk there, but you have to reserve one whole day for it. Good shoes are neccessary.
