Madeira Islands located in the Atlantic Ocean are the perfect refuge for sailors and a fantastic cruising site!
The Madeira Archipelago is 310 miles from the African coast and 620 miles from the European continent, which is the equivalent of a 3 days sailing from Portugal mainland.
The Madeira Archipelago, discovered by the Portuguese in 1418, is made up of the islands of Madeira, Porto Santo and the uninhabited islands of Selvagens and Desertas. It is situated between latitude 32º22’20" and 33º7’50" with its longitude between 16º16’30W and 17º16’38"W.
[edit] Climate and Weather
You will find mild temperatures all year around. Predominant winds are from northeast due to the Alisios winds current.
[edit] Places to go
Madeira Island South Coast has heaven bays for anchorage. The Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula, bathed by crystalline waters, with constant winds and small idyllic coves, is the ideal location for going sailing, doing water sports or simply enjoying nature to the fullest.
While sailing in Madeira, take also the opportunity to visit the unhabitated islands Desertas and Selvagens. They are Natural Reservations and habitat for many endemic species of Fauna and Flora.
The high season goes from August to November, with the visit of most sailing yachts on their way to cross the Atlantic bound to the Caribbean Sea, or aggregated in international regattas and rallies.
[edit] Marinas and Anchorages
There are 2 marinas with good support services and heaven locations:
- Porto Santo Marina & Boatyard in Porto Santo Island
- Quinta do Lorde Marina & Boatyard in Madeira Island
