Islay has a mild climate. Much of the interior is covered by mossland. Peat is still cut and used in the whiskey production. It is giving the unique flavour Islay's famous whiskies such as Bowmore, Laphroaig and Ardbeg. Most disteleris are still in production and welcome visitors to their products.
Port Ellen, Port Charlotte, Port Askaig are villages with terraces of single-storey houses lining the foreshore. Bowmore, Islay's main town and has a unique round church.

[edit] Port Ellen
Has a marina with 22 pontoons. The outer side was dredged to a depth of 3 m. In the inner side the depths is less than 2 m. Vessels up to 13m can take berth at the outer pontoons. The facilities are water, electricity, showers and laundry.
Moorings for visitors can be found on the west side of Kilnaughton Bay. Anchoring should be avoided near the pier, due the traffic of the ferry and fishing vessels.

Anchoring is feasible in the pool. It is advisable to pass to the right of the contre of the two tripod beacons. The bottom is mud. The distillery maintains two moorings for visitors.
