The Hebrides comprises the 'Outer Hebrides' or Western Isles, and the Inner Hebrides and Small Isles. These islands lie off the West Coast of Scotland ranging from Islay in the South to Lewis in the North.
The Outer Hebrides is a chain of islands which includes 'Lewis and Harris', the third largest landmass in the British Isles, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist, and Barra in the south. There are associated smaller islands which are no longer inhabited, or are connected to the major islands by causeways or bridges. One of the most iconic of the Outer Hebrides is the St. Kilda group which was last inhabited in 1936, and lies some 30 miles to the West, in the Atlantic.
The Inner Hebrides includes Skye, Mull and Iona, Colonsay, Tiree, Jura, Coll, Gigha, and Islay.
The Small Isles are a group of small inhabited islands south of Skye, and comprise Eigg, Much, Rum, and Canna.
