For transatlantic sailors, Faial is the most important island of the Azores. The marina in Horta, the capital of the island, is one of the most famous places on the way from west to east on the Atlantic Ocean.
The volcanic origin is obvious on Faial. There is a large volcano in the middle of the island. Some time ago, the western parts of Faial were destroyed by a volcano eruption. A town was completely covered by volcano ashes.
